We’re always looking for ways to help the community, so with Easter coming up, we donated figolli cakes to the children living at a creche and also the staff at a care home for the elderly.
Each Easter Blexr orders a traditional Maltese almond cake, called a figolla, for each of our staff as a seasonal treat.
However, this year Malta went on a partial lockdown shortly after we’d ordered 60 figolli, forcing us to vacate the office and work from home.
So we decided we were better off giving the Easter treats to the children who live at the Ursuline Sisters Creche in Sliema, not far from our Malta office, instead.
The children are unable to live with their parents for a variety of reasons, so they are cared for by the nuns until they are able to reunite with their families or enter the community as adults themselves.
Sister Valerie Farrugia, from the Sliema Creche, said: “Many, many thanks for thinking of our little angels. I’m sure they’re going to love and enjoy the figolli.
“Be assured of our prayers for you and your dear ones that Jesus, our glorified Saviour would help you and be by your side in these stressful times we’re all passing through. God bless you all.”
Meanwhile, staff at several care homes for the elderly around Malta are on complete lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic and have been living alongside their elderly residents for weeks now.
To help keep their spirits up, we also sent figolli cakes to each staff member at the Casa Marija Care Maltahome, also in Sliema.
We bought the 83 figolli from Ta’ Xmun Caterers who in turn are making a donation to the Inspire charity for each figolla they sell, so our friends at Inspire are also getting a small boost this Easter.
Inspire does great work to help out disabled children and adults.
Manuel Fenech, facility manager at Casa Marija, said: “This gesture brought our staff much closer to each other in this big-hearted effort to keep our loved ones safe.”
As the crisis continues, we’ll continue to offer help and support to those who need it, or just treats to lift people’s spirits, so keep an eye on our news page for more of our CSR work.
